Espíritu de Montjuïc: last information!

Spa-Francorchamps, Dijon-Prenois, Monza, the Hungaroring, Paul Ricard, etc. all the iconic European circuits are on Peter Auto’s 2019 programme. Although the Barcelona-Catalonia track is more modern it too has its rightful place on the historic races calendar as the first stone was laid 30 years ago – is it really that long?

The Greatest's Trophy - Espritu de Montjuic - Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya

At the time, it was built here at Montmeló to compensate for the lack of a permanent circuit in the region after the semi-urban layout in the Montjuïc  Park had been abandoned in 1975. Before it was deemed too dangerous the latter had been the theatre of victories in the Catalonia 1000-km race by some of the most glorious cars of the 1950s and 1960s: Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (1957), Aston Martin DB4 (1962), Lotus 19 (1964), AC Cobra (1965), Ford GT40 (1968), Porsche 356 (1958, 1963), 906 (1966), 911 (1967) et 908 (1969). Some of these legendary machines will take to the track this weekend!

While the Espíritu de Montjuïc celebrates the fabulous eponymous layout, it also commemorates the more recent history of the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit. Thus, for the first time Endurance Racing Legends, some of which took part in the Catalonia 1000 km in the 1990s and 2000s, in particular the Ferrari 333 SP that won in 1999, 2000 and 2001, will be racing in addition to the GTs and prototypes.

And above and beyond its historic heritage, this region is a great place to be because it provides a taste of spring-like conditions as well as celebrating the end of a 6-month truce. Last year, the Espíritu de Montjuïc received unanimous praise from all the entrants who were delighted to find their marks on a benchmark track as well as the big crowd that flocked to the circuit to enjoy the on-track spectacle and all the sideshows on offer.
