Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Tour de France: a car, a race
The common history of Ferrari and the Tour de France automobile is rich in victories and exceptional cars. One of them saw the moniker of the event associated with its name for eternity.
As the 250 generation really consolidated the name of Ferrari, it is one of the most emblematic with its line of cars including the 250 MM, 250 Testa Rossa, 250 GTO, 250 LM, 250 GT Lusso, 250 GT California Spyder and 250 GT Berlinetta Tour de France.
The 250 GT Berlinetta LWB (Long Wheelbase), designed by Pininfarina and built by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, was powered by the V12 engine from the brain of Gioacchino Colombo. It was inaugurated in 1952 in the 250 S with an initial power output of 240 bhp later increased to 260 horsepower.
In 1956, Spaniard Alfonso de Portago won the Tour de France Automobile beginning the long line of 250 GT Berlinettas Tour de France. Belgian duo Olivier Gendebien and Lucien Bianchi then racked up three more victories on the bounce in 1957, 1958 and 1959 .
Like the 250 GT SWB and 250 GTO, the 250 GT Tour de France is particularly sought after by Ferrari collectors. In August 2015, the car that won the 1956 Tour de France Automobile went under the hammer for $13 200 000 (more than 11 600 000 euros) at an auction held during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elégance in California.
