Ferrari 250 GT SWB, an Italian legend
The Ferrari 250 GT SWB, presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1959, stamped its mark on road and track alike as one of the incontestable superstars in the history of the Prancing Horse. A car to discover at the Espíritu de Montjuïc.
It was the first GT Ferrari equipped with disc brakes. Its shortened wheelbase led to the acronym SWB (short wheelbase) becoming part of history while giving the car better road-holding to make the most of the 280 bhp developed by its 3-litre V12 engine.
Initially, it was designed for racing and it quickly racked up a remarkable set of results. In addition to three consecutive victories in the Tour de France Automobile (1960 to 1962), the 250 GT SWB scored a great result in the 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans filling fourth to seventh places in the general classification. The following year a 250 SWB driven by Jean Guichet and Pierre Noblet finished third overall in the Sarthe.
The subtle balance of its taut curved lines made a huge contribution to consolidating Ferrari’s position on the market for high-class grand touring sports cars. The present example (3401GT) is the 135th of the 165 built.
