Lola T70 Mk3, the privateer’s favourite weapon

During the second half of the 1960s and the early 1970s the Lola T70 was much sought after by private entrants and drivers to the extent that over 100 were produced.

The Lola T70 came out in 1965 and was the work of Eric Broadley, who also designed the Ford GT40. It raced in the CanAm Challenge and in endurance and appeared in three iterations: the Mk Is and Mk IIs had open bodywork while the Mk III shown here had a closed cockpit.

The Lola T70 Mk III B’s moment of glory came in 1969 when it scored a double in the 24 Hours of Daytona won by Mark Donohue-Chuck Parsons (Team Penske) followed in second place by Ed Leslie-Lothar Motschenbacher (American International Racing). From 1967 to 1971, it was a regular feature on the grid for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The T70 Mk III B also played a walk-on role in the film Le Mans produced by Steve McQueen and shot during the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was disguised as a Ferrari 512 and a Porsche 917 for two spectacular accident sequences. These two cars were christened Lolari and Porschola by the film crew!  

The Lola T70 also reappeared in the 1980s because its chassis served as the base for the Nimrod-Aston Martin prototypes seen in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1982, 83 and 84.
